Volvo Cars Celebrates 99 Years on the Road
In early April 1927, in Volvo’s hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden, a historic moment took place. For the first time, a mass-produced Volvo car rolled out of the factory gates. The only sounds were the cheers of factory workers and office staff, everyone celebrating a milestone they had long been waiting for. The very first Volvo had officially hit the road.
Now, as Volvo celebrates its 99th anniversary, the company reflects on a legacy that spans sporty models, family cars, innovative SUVs, and versatile estate vehicles. Over the decades, Volvo has become known for its distinctive design, pioneering technology, advanced safety features, and enjoyable driving experience.
At its core, Volvo has always been a brand for people who care, about each other and about the world around them. Their mission has remained consistent: to make life simpler, better, and safer for everyone.
Memorable Milestones
In the 1940s, the PV 444, often called “the little Volvo”, helped introduce the company to a wider global audience. In Sweden, it came to symbolise hope and prosperity in the post-war era.
A decade later, the Duett was launched with a simple but powerful idea: one car that could serve both work and leisure purposes. This concept laid the foundation for Volvo’s long-standing reputation in estate cars, with more than six million produced since then.
One of Volvo’s most significant contributions to automotive safety came in 1959 with the introduction of the three-point safety belt, developed by engineer Nils Bohlin. Volvo made the patent freely available to other manufacturers, and it is estimated that this innovation has saved over a million lives worldwide.
In 1974, Volvo introduced the 240 and 260 models, selling more than 2.8 million units over the following 19 years. The 240, often nicknamed “the brick” due to its boxy design, earned a strong safety reputation thanks to features like crumple zones and reinforced bumpers.
Volvo’s leadership in safety was further recognised when the US government selected 24 Volvo 240 cars for extensive crash testing. Following these tests, Volvo was considered the benchmark for automotive safety standards.
In 2002, Volvo launched its first SUV, the Volvo XC90. Combining luxury, safety, and advanced technology, it became an instant global success and redefined expectations for large SUVs. Within a few years, it had become one of Sweden’s most important export products.
More than two decades later, Volvo continues to build on this legacy with innovations like the fully electric Volvo EX60, representing the next step in the brand’s evolution.
Looking Ahead
Volvo’s heritage continues to guide its future. The same values that shaped its earliest vehicles, care for people, respect for the environment, and a commitment to thoughtful progress, remain at the heart of everything the company does today, and everything it aims to achieve tomorrow.
